Grout can get downright dingy if you don’t pay special attention to cleaning it. Something about the texture of the grout and the little cracks in between the tiles really seems to attract dirt and grime. Unfortunately, with the humid weather in and around Orlando Florida, regular tile cleanings aren’t necessarily enough to keep your grout looking good. Getting stuck in dirt and mildew out of hard to reach places requires a little extra care. We’ve found two really great techniques for getting your grout and tile sparkling clean.

DIY Tile & Grout Scrub

Harsh chemicals might do an effective job, but you don’t want these products in your home around your family, pets, and friends. Instead of using a chemical cleaner, whip up a batch of this simple do-it-yourself grout scrub.

You’ll need these supplies:

• Scrub Brush or Nail Brush
• Hydrogen Peroxide
• Baking Soda
• Dawn Dish Soap (optional)

If you’re working on a tile floor, begin by pouring some of the peroxide into the grout lines. This will act as sort of a pre-soak, so you won’t have to do as much scrubbing. For tile walls, you can skip this step or put peroxide into a spray bottle and spritz your surface before beginning. Once you’ve pretreated the area, make a paste using the baking soda and peroxide. Add enough baking soda to keep the paste fairly thick. You can use dawn dish soap in the mixture as well. It is especially helpful in kitchen areas where you may have grease to cut through.

Use the brush to scrub the grout and tiles with the peroxide and baking soda paste. Scrub each grout line firmly. You may have to go over dirty areas a few times. Once the tile has been scrubbed, simply rinse with water and reveal the beautiful, clean grout underneath. If the tile and grout are very dirty or dark, you may need to let the scrub sit for a few minutes. This will give it an opportunity to harness the whitening power of the peroxide. Steam Cleaning Grout

Another safe and effective method for getting your grout really clean is steam cleaning. Hot steam is excellent for killing bacteria, mold, and mildew that are growing in the grout’s cracks and crevices. It is one of the most effective ways to kill germs and clean at the same time – all without harsh chemicals or fumes. Plus, you won’t have to put in as much elbow grease because steam cleaning doesn’t require as much scrubbing. This method is simple too. Clean your grout and tile surfaces with warm water and some soap if desired. Then use a steamer, carpet cleaning attachment, or steam iron to clean the entire surface with steam. If you don’t have a steamer, a professional can also complete this process for you. It can be very cost-effective to have tile and grout professionally cleaned, and you’ll get guaranteed results.
